This week’s episode is short and sweet, but the questions still pack a punch!
So, let’s get on with the quirky questions, shall we? This week we have a fellow kiwi, Zoe Piper.Â
Author Bio
Zoe Piper is English by birth and a Kiwi by choice, living in Auckland, New Zealand for over thirty years. She has had a long and varied administrivia career in many different industries from agriculture to the outdoor sports industry.
She is a bookaholic who devours several books a week, and when not escaping into other authors worlds, she can be found staring at her screen trying to wrangle her own.
Zoe’s Quirky Questions
Holly: If you were stuck on a desert island all alone with only three things, what would they be?
ZOE: A portable solar panel to charge my kindle (yes, I’m horribly practical!); a comfy, shady reading spot; all of my favourite snack foods and drinks
Holly: Do you play music while you write — and, if so, what’s your favorite?
ZOE: I’ve recently discovered brown noise which really helps my focus and creativity, but I also do listen to music as well.  Favourite artists include Harry Styles, Adam Lambert, P!nk, and as I was an 80’s teen, Wham!, and Paul Young. Â
Holly: When did you first call yourself a writer?Â
ZOE: I still struggle to call myself a writer (hello, imposter syndrome), but I am getting better at it. I think it became much more real when my second book, The Sweetest Song, finalled and got second place in the 2019 NZ Romance Writers Koru Awards. This is a reader judged competition and I entered more to get feedback on my writing, rather than actually trying to win it.Â
Holly: Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?
ZOE: Part-time writer. I do have a busy day job, which I love, but by the time I get home from staring at a computer all day, it is hard to motivate myself to sit down again and write. Earlier this year I got into the habit of having some down time when I got home, doing the dinner thing, and then heading off to write. I’ve  set myself a goal of 15 minutes of writing. Often I end up writing for over an hour. Unfortunately, life things have happened, and I’ve fallen out of the habit, but I am trying to do this a couple of nights a week to get back into the rhythm. Â
Holly: Are you a plotter or a pantster?
ZOE: I more of a “plantster”. <grin>. I have certain scenes I know I want in the book but getting to those scenes is a meandering path that often takes me routes I’d never even considered. For Soul Bound, my first paranormal, I did write down a lot of the world building and character traits beforehand, as I knew I needed to get that right and consistent.
Holly: What do you do if you get a brilliant idea at a bad time?
ZOE: I’ve learnt to either make copious notes, or even write the scene just to get it out of my brain.
Holly: Tell me something from your bucket list
ZOE: I’d love to go to the Maldives. It looks so serene and peaceful. Maybe for my next milestone birthday.
